Independence day Madagascar

Independence day Madagascar

26 June is Madagascar’s national holiday, and it’s the biggest and most colourful holiday of the year on the red island. It has been ever since 1960, when the Republic of Madagascar was proclaimed. Malagasy flags fly everywhere, and people wish each other ‘fety sambatra’, or ‘have a great party’.

The event brings a long period of festivities to a close. In fact, from Easter onwards, Antsirabe turns into the summer party capital. Many Malagasy people spend this time in a cooler spot in the central highlands.
