Tot voor kort duurde het soms zelfs 5 dagen om via de 312 km lange onverharde weg te reizen van Ambilobe naar Vohemar in het noorden. Nu de weg geasfalteerd is, leidt een strakke weg reizigers in een mum van tijd naar de rijke natuur en de culturele bezienswaardigheden in het Grote Noorden.
Dit is de Sava-regio, wereldwijd de grootste exporteur van vanille. Hier woont een mix van etnische groepen, elk met z’n eigen tradities, taal en cultuur. Boeiend, sowieso.

Sambava en streekgenoten
Deze regio herbergt verschillende belangrijke steden, denk maar aan Antalaha, Vohemar en Andapa. Sambava (foto) is de grootste en is het commerciële en economische hart van de streek.
Rijke en diverse natuur
De Sava-regio strekt zich uit langs de kust van de Indische Oceaan. Dat zorgt voor gevarieerde landschappen zoals heuvels, rivieren, regenwouden, prachtige stranden langs de kustlijn.
Productie van vanille
Agriculture and trade are the mainstays of the local economy. The high quality of the vanilla produced here means that there is great demand for the spice all over the world. A visit to a vanilla plantation is an absolute must. 😉
Marojejy National Park
An undisputed highlight is Marojejy – one of the most spectacular and biologically diverse mountain environments in the country. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to unique flora and fauna, such as the grey bamboo lemur in the photo.
