The variety of Northern Madagascar: ready to discover now!

Fantastic news for your travellers who want to discover the glorious, varied landscape of the Sava region from Sambava or even the capital, Antananarivo. Because northern Madagascar is now very easy to access on the new RN5a asphalt road.

Until recently, it could take up to five days to navigate the 312 km of dirt road from Ambilobe to Vohemar in the north. Now the road has been asphalted, a clear route takes travellers to the lavish natural beauty and cultural sights of Northern Madagascar in no time at all.

This is the Sava region—the world’s largest exporter of vanilla. A melting pot of ethnic groups live here, each with their own traditions, language and culture. It’s guaranteed to be fascinating.

In short, this region in the northeast of the island has many Malagasy gems that have suddenly come within reach:

Sambava and the surrounding area

There are several big towns in this area, such as Antalaha, Vohemar and Andapa. Sambava (photo) is the largest, and the commercial and economic heart of the region.

Rich, diverse nature

The Sava region stretches along the Indian Ocean coast, with varied landscapes such as hills, rivers, rainforests and gorgeous beaches beside the sea.

Vanilla production

Agriculture and trade are the mainstays of the local economy. The high quality of the vanilla produced here means that there is great demand for the spice all over the world. A visit to a vanilla plantation is an absolute must. 😉

Marojejy National Park

An undisputed highlight is Marojejy – one of the most spectacular and biologically diverse mountain environments in the country. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to unique flora and fauna, such as the grey bamboo lemur in the photo.
